Validators and SOL economics
How validators earn, what commission means for your stake, why client diversity matters, and where SOL inflation is heading.
Roughly a thousand validators keep Solana running. Each stakes SOL, votes on blocks and takes turns as leader. Understanding how they earn helps you choose where to stake and read news about SOL's supply.
How validators earn
- Inflation rewards, distributed every epoch in proportion to stake and voting performance.
- Block rewards: half of each block's base fees (the other half is burned) and all priority fees.
- MEV tips for validators running Jito.
They pass rewards to delegators minus a commission. Many charge 0 to 5% on inflation rewards and a separate cut of MEV. A validator with poor uptime earns less, and so do you.

New SOL is issued to stakers on a schedule that started at 8% a year and falls by a fixed percentage each year toward a long-term floor of 1.5%. It stood at 3.82% in June 2026.
In August 2026, validators passed SIMD-0550, proposed by Helius CEO Mert Mumtaz, with 67% of participating stake. It doubles the yearly decline from 15% to 30%, so inflation reaches 1.5% around the first half of 2029 instead of 2032. Implementation needs client work and a feature gate, so activation is expected in early 2027.
What it means for stakers: base staking yield falls faster (Blockdaemon projects about 4.3% after a year instead of 4.9%), but less SOL is printed, so the dilution of non-stakers also falls. Staking yields are always partly a transfer from people who don't stake.
Client diversity
A client is the software a validator runs.
| Client | Built by | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Agave | Anza | The reference client |
| Jito-Solana | Jito | Agave plus the MEV block engine |
| Firedancer | Jump Crypto | Independent rewrite, live since Dec 2025 |
| Harmonic | Harmonic | Agave-based |
Before Alpenglow, Firedancer-family clients held roughly 15% of stake. If one client has a bug, the others keep producing blocks.
Choosing where to stake
You don't need to pick validators yourself: LSTs spread stake across many. If you do, look for low commission, high uptime, a stake that isn't already huge (concentration risk for the network), and a validator not in an overcrowded data center. Marinade's Explore dashboard and Sanctum's validator LSTs make this easier.

Network health
Validator counts fell from over 2,500 in 2023 to roughly 750 to 1,000 by 2026 as costs rose and smaller operators left. Alpenglow's switch from vote fees to a 0.8 SOL per epoch admission ticket slightly lowers validator costs.
Key takeaways
- Validators earn inflation rewards, block fees and MEV, then share them with delegators minus commission.
- SOL inflation was 3.82% in mid-2026 and falls toward a 1.5% floor.
- SIMD-0550 doubles the yearly disinflation from 15% to 30%, likely from early 2027.
- Multiple validator clients (Agave, Firedancer) make the network more resilient.
